New York CNN —Nearly 10,000 workers from a coalition of separate unions, working for a diverse group of employers, are planning a series of coordinated strikes in Minnesota this week and next. These kind of collective strikes are common and somewhat easier in Europe, where union membership is more widespread and unions can strike in support of other unions, even if their own contracts have expired. He’s gone on strike twice before, but those were both one-day strikes that he and the union knew would be over quickly. The fact that multiple unions plan to strike together in Minnesota is giving members more confidence, according to Jamie Gully, president of SEIU Healthcare Minnesota and Iowa. He said he hopes that if these negotiations prove successful, unions elsewhere in the country will use the same strategy.

The 33 strikes last year is roughly double the average of 16.7 major strikes a year over the course of the last 20 years. A separate database of all work stoppages by Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations shows that there were 451 work stoppages in 2023, up 9% from the 2022 total. So the major strikes of 1,000 or more account for less than 10% of the overall number of strikes. So many of the major strikes and contract negotiations that occurred in 2023 will not occur again in 2024. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a chance of some major work stoppages this year.

The strike lasted more than six weeks before the union won contracts it was seeking from all three unionized US automakers. The unions won significant pay increases and job protections they were seeking. And even with some of the contracts that pass, some union members offer significant opposition, believing they could have negotiated for even more. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas hotel union workers voted overwhelmingly Monday to approve their contract agreement with casino giant Caesars Entertainment, signaling an end to lengthy labor disputes that had brought the threat of a historic strike to the Strip. The Culinary Workers Union announced on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that 99% of the vote favored the new five-year deal. The breakthrough deals were tentatively reached earlier this month, just hours before the union had threatened a massive walkout at 18 hotel-casinos on the Strip, including Bellagio, Paris Las Vegas, MGM Grand and Caesars Palace. By the end of the contract, Pappageorge said, union workers will be earning on average $35 hourly, including benefits. Union workers currently make about $26 hourly with benefits.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Tens of thousands of health care workers have ratified a new four-year contract with industry giant Kaiser Permanente following a strike over wages and staffing levels, the parties announced Thursday. Of the 85,000 members in the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions, 98.5% voted in recent weeks to ratify the contract, the coalition said in a press release. The deal includes setting minimum hourly wages at $25 in California, where most of Kaiser’s facilities are located, and $23 in other states. The workers’ last contract was negotiated in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic. The three-day strike last month involved 75,000 workers in California, Colorado, Oregon and Washington.

More than a week after Tesla mechanics in Sweden began a strike to compel the U.S. automaker to accept a collective labor agreement, union officials said Tesla representatives would meet with the union on Monday. Tesla doesn’t make cars in Sweden, and the country is a relatively small market for the automaker. But the job action by dozens of mechanics is beginning to reverberate. Since the union called the strike on Oct. 27, dozens of the mechanics who are union members have been staying home, disrupting service appointments for some Tesla drivers. Not all of the union members have taken part, said Jesper Pettersson, a spokesman for IF Metall, acknowledging reports that some service facilities appeared largely unaffected.

New York CNN —The longest US auto strike in 25 years is nearly over. The United Auto Workers union announced a tentative agreement on a contract with General Motors Monday night. Typically when a union goes on strike, and then reaches a tentative deal, the workers don’t return to work until the ratification process is completed. The union hasn’t yet said why its 18,000 strikers are going back to work before the ratification process is conducted. Fewer senior union members who are not at top pay could see their pay increase by between 20% to 46%.

Neither the union nor GM would confirm the tentative deal. Most recently that happened at Mack Trucks, where nearly 4,000 UAW members went on strike on October 8 after voting no on their own tentative agreement. There are a total of more than 18,000 UAW members at GM now on strike, though they could be returning to work within days. The strike had a total of nearly 50,000 UAW members on strike at one point or another, although not all at the same time. During the UAW strike, a coalition of unions at Kaiser Permanente had 75,000 workers walk out in the largest US health care strike in history.
